Lucas County Clerk of Courts Criminal Records

The Lucas County Clerk of Courts keeps all criminal case files for the Court of Common Pleas. The main office is at 700 Adams Street, Suite 1101, in Toledo. The Dockets Online system is the main way to search Lucas County criminal records from home. It covers the Common Pleas Court in all its divisions, the Toledo Municipal Court, and the Second District Court of Appeals. You can search by party name, case number, attorney, judge, or a range of filing dates. Criminal case results show felony charges and indictments, arraignment dates, bond info, plea entries, trial dates, and sentencing details. The system is free to use and runs around the clock, so you can pull up case data at any time.

The municipal court also lets you pay fines online and view court schedules. Misdemeanor cases that start here can be appealed to the Common Pleas Court. If a case gets bound over from a preliminary hearing, the felony charge moves to the General Division. Most traffic infractions stay at the municipal level unless they involve serious offenses. Court records from Toledo Municipal are also searchable through the county Dockets Online system.

You can ask about active warrants by phone or in person. The Sheriff also posts daily booking summaries. Each entry shows the name of the person booked, the charges, and the arresting agency. If you need copies of arrest reports or incident records, submit a public records request. The office processes requests by email, mail, or in person. Ohio law under ORC 149.43 says agencies must provide records promptly. However, active investigation files may be held back until the case closes.

Public Access to Criminal Records in Lucas County

Criminal court records in Lucas County are public under Ohio law. Anyone can view them. You do not need to say why you want the records or give your name when making a request. The Clerk of Courts must provide records promptly and can only charge the cost of copies.

Some records are not open to the public. Juvenile case files are sealed under Ohio Revised Code 2151.358. Grand jury proceedings stay confidential. Records that have been sealed or expunged under ORC 2953.32 are removed from public view. Certain first-time offenders and people with minor convictions can petition the court to seal their Lucas County criminal records after the required waiting period. The application fee is $50, plus possible local court costs.

Law enforcement files that are part of an open investigation may also be withheld. Social Security numbers, medical records, and attorney-client privileged documents are redacted before release.

Lucas County Background Checks

For formal background checks, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) runs the WebCheck system. This uses electronic fingerprinting to search the state criminal database. Many jobs in Lucas County require a BCI check, especially in schools, healthcare, and childcare.

Under ORC 109.572, certain employers and licensing boards must request background checks through BCI. The process takes a few business days.
