Summit County Criminal Records

Akron is in Summit County. All felony criminal cases from the city go through the Summit County Court of Common Pleas. The Summit County Clerk of Courts maintains records for all Common Pleas divisions, including civil, criminal, and domestic relations. The courthouse is at 205 S. High Street, Akron, OH 44308.

The online case search covers felony criminal cases, civil cases over $15,000, domestic relations matters, and Court of Appeals filings. You can search by case number, party name, or date range. Copy fees follow Ohio Revised Code rates. Certified copies carry an extra fee. Records are public under ORC 149.43 with standard exceptions for sealed cases.

The Akron Police Department Records Room keeps arrest records, offense reports, crash reports, and incident files. The office is in Room 208 at 217 S. High Street, Akron, OH 44308. Akron has an online lookup tool at the Akron Police Online Lookup page. You can search for specific offense reports by report number, report date, name, or address. There is also a group offense report search that lets you filter by district, crime type, and date range. Crash report lookups are available online too. The department handles records requests under ORC 149.43. Requests must be specific enough to identify what you need. Ambiguous or overly broad requests can be denied per state law, citing State ex rel. Dillery v. Icsman. Standard copy fees apply.

Akron Municipal Court Criminal Records

The Akron Municipal Court handles misdemeanor criminal cases, traffic violations, and civil matters within the city. You can search case records online through the court's website.

Records include charges, hearing dates, dispositions, fines, and sentencing details. Municipal court records follow Ohio retention rules under ORC 1901.41 and the Rules of Superintendence. Sealed or expunged cases are not available through public search.

Akron City Law Department Records

Non-police city records go through the Akron Law Department. Email public records requests to publicrecords@akronohio.gov. The Civil Division is at 172 S. Broadway, Suite 200, Akron, OH 44308. The Law Department covers city ordinances, resolutions, contracts, legal opinions, administrative policies, budget data, and other public documents. This office handles records for all city departments except the police, which runs its own records process. The department follows Ohio Sunshine Laws for all requests.

Akron's Prosecutor's Office at the Law Department handles criminal prosecutions filed in municipal court. The office works closely with the police department on cases that move from arrest to formal charges. Public records from the Prosecutor's Office can be requested through the Law Department email.

Sealing Akron Criminal Records

Under ORC 2953.32, eligible defendants can petition the Summit County Court of Common Pleas to seal their Akron criminal records. The filing fee is $50 plus local court costs. A hearing gets scheduled and the prosecutor has a chance to object.

Not all offenses qualify. First and second-degree felonies, violent crimes, and sex offenses cannot be sealed in Ohio. There are waiting periods based on the type of offense and sentence. If granted, sealed records won't show up in most public searches. For statewide background checks, the BCI runs WebCheck checks. Under ORC 109.572, some jobs require a full BCI background check regardless of whether records have been sealed. The ODRC Offender Search also covers state inmates from Akron.
